The two Bend filmmakers behind the documentary, Taylor Morden and Zeke Kamm, had no idea if the store would stay open when they started filming in Morden said he has heard from people who call Harding a national treasure and say the store must remain open at all costs. The Bend Blockbuster has no plans to close. It has a steady lease agreement, and the local owners, Ken and Debbie Tisher, have leased the property since , when it was a Pacific Video store.
The store was franchised in and became a Blockbuster. In its heyday, Blockbuster Video had 9, stores around the world. Bruce Thomson, economist with the Florida Department of Labor, said the multiplier effect at work in Blockbuster's industry means an additional jobs would be indirectly lost in the community.
Those jobs would be at companies that do business with Blockbuster, as well as in retail stores, restaurants and other service industries. And the cost to some not-for-profit organizations would be huge:. Blockbuster has been the presenting sponsor of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival for four years, and has been a supporter for eight. The company does the design, printing and mailing of the quarterly film festival newsletter; prints and mails monthly movie invitations; and pays to print the festival poster, which it ships to Blockbusters nationwide.
Festival board members include Mike Clark, vice president of products, and Gale Butler, vice president of corporate affairs.
